Skylight Maintenance

from:

There are many window styles and options. In addition to traditional ‘side windows’, many people opt for installing skylights. These windows that are installed in the roof give a different view of the world and can create a spectacular effect for a room. They can even make small room, hallway, or entryway appear much larger than the actual size of the space.

But along with skylights, as with any window in your house, there comes the small detail of window maintenance and window repair. This makes some people squeamish about even installing skylights.

1. Leaking skylights are not only annoying, they can cause serious damage to your roof, attic, ceiling, and other parts of your house. It’s important to care of them as quickly as possible. Don’t wait until you see your skylight leaking to take action. It’s a good idea to do an annual examination of all windows and that includes skylights. Check to ensure there are no cracks and check to make sure the flashing is doing its job too.

2. During the annual examination of the skylight, check for any small cracks that may have occurred from falling branches, hail, or other environmental elements. If you find cracks early enough, they’re much easier to repair.

3. Maintenance includes window repair AND window washing. When you are faithful about washing skylights, they last longer and are less likely to have other problems. Washing removes twigs, dirt, leaves, debris, and other particles that can attract insects and bugs. Cleaning your skylight will help maintain its structure and its beauty – allowing the sun to shine through and flood your room with healthy light.

4. If you have a skylight that has vents or other openings, check them to make sure they are clean and in good working order. You may to grease the hinges annually to keep them working well. If screens are included on the skylight, it’s a good idea to remove them and wash them thoroughly before replacing them.

Cleaning a skylight from the outside requires that you climb onto the roof so always exercise caution when undertaking this task. Use safety precautions that include use of a sturdy ladder, rubber-soled shoes, and other things that make it safer for you to work on the roof. If you are afraid of heights or in the least bit uncomfortable, it’s best to have someone else do this job for you.

Annual maintenance and repair of your skylights will help you ensure many more years of beauty from your skylight installation.
