tips on installing paneling

from:

Paneling is a great way to decorate your room. There are various types of paneling like frame-and-panel designs, rustic boards, and detailed raised panels. Paneling can be made out of cheap pine or fine hardwoods and it can be coated, stained, painted or even made clear according to your requirements. Among the types of paneling, the most common ones are sheets – 4 feet by 8 feet and boards – 3 to 10 inches in width.

First tip

Keep your paneling woods for some days in the room where paneling would be done. This will allow the woods to adjust accordingly to the room’s temperature. Following this, when they will be put on the wall, there will not be any shrinkage or expansion problems.

Second tip

Next, prepare the wall for paneling. You can attach the wood panel to the wall with plaster or wall board if it has a finished wood-frame. Otherwise, you will need flat furring strips to attach to the studs for fastening the panels to the base.

Third tip

It is important that each panel is cut ¼ inch shorter than the space from the ceiling to the floor. Make use of adhesive and position the panel on the wall and this time again keep a ¼ inch space at the foot. Now pull the rim of the base almost 6 inches away from the wall and thrust a block behind the pane. Hold on, till the adhesive binds it effectively and then remove the block and press it firmly using the rubber hammer. Finally, you can nail it from the top and bottom of the sheet. Do not forget to cover the ¼ inch gap below and the nail heads by molding.

Safety tips to remember

Wear proper gear while working with toxic matter.

Keep the correct tool required for the work.

Make sure that the blades are sharp.

Dull blade can be dangerous as excessive force might.

Do not forget to wear gloves while working with solvents.

Some adhesives are flammable; so do not smoke as it might cause a fire.

Talking about the right tools for this purpose, make sure you have hammer, adhesive, electric drill, screws tape measure, jig saw, nail set, assorted screwdrivers, carpenter’s square, handsaw and pencil along with a list of others. These tools aid you in your job provided you know how and where to use them. During your first attempt, is advisable to be careful with the procedure and learn the techniques properly beforehand. If you are paneling your bathroom, it is quite a challenging job as there are many intricacies involved in the procedure. Keeping these tips in mind would surely help you with the panel installation in your home.
